NWBC Regions

The NWBC is divided up into 5 different regions.  Learn a bit about the regions below,

  • Seattle Church Planting is the church multiplication arm of The Puget Sound Metro Region (NWBC Region 1), an area comprised of urban, suburban, and rural settings. This diverse, secular, postmodern setting has more than 4 million people and over 100 major languages. The large population centers of Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, Everett, Bellingham and the surrounding communities are home to major industries (Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, Nintendo-USA, Alaska Airlines, biotech research, fishing, tourism) and significant educational institutions (University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University, and more). Set on the Puget Sound with many lakes and rivers, and surrounded by the Olympic and Cascade mountains, the region is one the most beautiful metropolitan spaces in the world.

Spiritually, the greater Seattle area is one of incredible opportunity. While over 80% of people believe in something beyond the physical realm, only about 1/3 are a part of any organized religion. It is a pre-Christian society that is seeing encouraging growth in the number of new disciples, churches, and even networks. On any given Sunday, only 4% of the population attends an evangelical church of any kind. Less than 1% attend a Southern Baptist church. We are “planting the Gospel” to see God’s Kingdom expand through the making of new disciples…and it is.

Since 2000, the number of Region 1 churches has approximately doubled. About half of our churches are 2nd generation ethnic churches or worship in languages other than English. Seattle Church Planting provides planters and their teams with one of the most extensive support systems anywhere, including prayer support, assessment, training, focus community exegesis, partnership development, coaching, advocates, planter networks, spouse networks, family gatherings, online giving, an administrative hub, block party trailers, portable baptistries, and more.

  • Western Washington Church Planting (NWBC Region 2) is the product of years of work by a dedicated team of churches that began as a cooperative initiative of the Olympic Baptist Association, Southwest Washington Baptist Association, Northwest Baptist Convention, and North American Mission Board. After over 60 years of ministry in western Washington, we have been impacted dramatically over the past five years by cooperative prayer, partnership and participation with teams from across North America. We look across the landscape of our field and see over 45 churches composed of people from around North America and the world. We now stand poised in Western Washington with a passion to see our cities, towns, and communities transformed by an almighty God and with a plan that has been formed by those same three elements: prayer, partnership and participation. As we look to that future our family of churches holds these things in common.

    Our Vision

The churches in western Washington will be an expanding, vibrant network of cooperating congregations that will draw people toward Jesus Christ through life-changing ministries.

    Our Mission

To encourage and empower the churches of western Washington toward a spiritual vitality that results in a growing Gospel witness and in the continuous planting of healthy, reproducing new churches.

    Our Core Values

    • Leadership and Service
    • Creativity and Excellence
    • Inclusion and Cooperation
    • Urgency and Faith

    The hope – the dream

The hope and dream is that a true God-led movement is developing to a point that the region is transformed to a place where it is evident that God reigns.

  • Portland Church Planting – Making Disciples who make disciples, forming new churches throughout the Portland Metro area.

Portland, Oregon is the 27th largest city in North America, with 2.36 million residents in the metro area (600,000 in the urban core). Commonly referred to as Bridgetown, Stumptown, the Rose City, Rip City, Portlandia, and PDX, the moniker “keep Portland weird” is a daily tribute to the uniqueness of Portlanders.

Portland is a coffee-lover’s haven, and the biking capital of North America (6-7% commute to work by bike). It is the home of corporate giants like Nike and Adidas, and yet boasts over 700 food carts and trucks, making it truly a city of “cheap eats” with world class flavor, ranking as the World’s Best Street Food. A city of neighborhoods, it is “a Big city of Small neighborhoods.” It is also a city of refugees — both nationally and internationally.

Portland is a very spiritual-seeking city, although many do not know what they are seeking. It is a city in need of Jesus- the one who is seeking them.

Some stats according to Portlanders…. -64% believe in something -25% consider themselves religious -39% consider themselves spiritual -10% are atheist -17% classify themselves as agnostic -8% are confused -23% participate in organized religion regularly (daily/weekly) -26% participate for major holidays -51% never participate in organized religion

Though largely unchurched, Portland is a city of spiritual seeking people. The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Currently, the Portland Metro area has approximately 78 SBC churches. However, most of these churches gather outside the central city causing what is referred to as the “donut effect.” Many of us know that cities are central to spreading the Gospel. Most of us know that Jesus’ movement started in large metropolitan areas before spreading like wildfire through the ancient world. Portland Church Planting, while still planting churches in the suburbs and rural areas of the Portland metro area, is poised to re-imagine being the people of God in the central city, engaging “the donut hole” in Portland. Join us in making disciples who make disciples, resulting in the birth of new churches in Portlandia – where young people go to retire.

  • Region 4 encompasses the majority of the state of Oregon, and a tiny bit of Northern California.  Extremely diverse in many ways, from the larger cities like Eugene and Salem, to extremely rural areas, desert, mountains and coastline - we have it all! The last five years have seen a number of rePlants as well as Hispanic plants happening. We are excited to see what God has in store for the years to come!

    Region 4

  • Region 5 of the Northwest Baptist Convention is made up of Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho, and Northeastern Oregon. There is great variety contained within this vast region – mountains and farmland, dry desert and lush green land.

There are cities here (Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities, Moses Lake, Wenatchee, Coeur D’Alene, Lewiston, Pendleton and Baker City) and smaller towns, too (Ritzville, Coulee City, Sandpoint, Omak, Heppner, and Warden.) It is suburban and rural, young and the old, churches proclaiming the Gospel, and those without Christ.

Nestled in the region are eight Native American reservations; Native American Church planters are needed. Church planters are needed to plant churches in a variety of cultures and settings, in both rural towns and cities. A deaf church planter is needed. Contemporary and traditional churches are needed.

There are many more needs and places to plant. God is at work and is sending workers into the harvest. Are you one of those workers?

Direction

Thank you for your interest in Church Planting in the Northwest. Below you will find the materials necessary to begin your application process to be considered to join in this effort.

The following is a general summary of a typical application/assessment process:

1. Please begin by completing the West Coast Church Planting Application by downloading or online here. This same application can be submitted for planting opportunities throughout the Pacific Northwest (including Seattle and Portland,) and the Vancouver, BC area. Include the following items with your application:

a. West Coast Confidential Questionnaire CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD

b. Digital family photo

c. Resume (if available)

d. Sermon audio or video file. If the file is too large to email and is not already available online, contact Natalie for instructions on how to submit the file.

2. Register on NAMB’s website: http://sendme.namb.net/church-planting

Please make sure you list “West Region”, as well as any specific Church Planting Catalyst / Send City Missionary you are working with. If you are applying for a Send City (Seattle or Portland), please note that also.

3. A follow-up phone interview with a Church Planting Catalyst will be scheduled once all materials are received. Once materials are reviewed, and it is agreed to proceed, the Catalyst will request a link be sent for NAMB’s online application and assessments.

4. Use the link you receive from NAMB to complete NAMB’s online application, references and assessments. Please personally contact your references to ask them to complete references/tools in a timely manner.

Online assessments may include but are not limited to:

  • Church Planter Profile (CPP)
  • Prepare-Enrich Marriage Assessment (if married or engaged)
  • Church Leader Inventory (CLI) and, if applicable, Church Leader Spouse Inventory (CLSI)

*The cost of the inventories is less than $100. If you ultimately plant with NAMB they will reimburse the costs. If paying the initial expense is a hardship for you, contact Natalie Hammond.

5. Use the web link emailed to you from NAMB to complete online Ministry Safe Training.

6. Read Life on Mission by Dustin Willis and Aaron Coe. Then complete the Expectations Survey and email to Natalie Hammond in preparation for the Church Planter Assessment & Development Center.

7. The application materials are reviewed by the Church Planting Catalyst(s). If a decision is made to proceed, then an invitation is issued to attend the in-person Church Planter Assessment & Development Center (CPADC).

8. With coaching from your Church Planting Catalyst*, work on gathering needed information in order to complete your Planting Projector. (http://www.plantingprojector.com)

Use this form to help you gather required information. Once the form is completed, seek preliminary approval from your Church Planting Catalyst*, who will then submit it to Gary Irby and Natalie Hammond for NWBC preliminary approval. All planters need a Sending Church and at least one Partner Church in order to obtain final Planting Projector approval.

*In Region 1 work with Ron Shepard.

9. Participate in Church Planter Assessment & Development Center. The in-person assessment is for both candidate and spouse. For upcoming assessment center dates, please contact Natalie Hammond.

10. A Field Visit is conducted to determine planting location (this may take place in tandem with the CPADC).

If looking at intern or apprentice positions, at this point we would also determine with which church you would intern/apprentice.

11. At this point the decision is made by Catalyst(s) to partner with you, and the planting field is agreed upon.

12. Catalyst submits your final paperwork to NAMB. (Interns/apprentices require form submitted by their field church.)

13. Complete your Planting Projector (http://www.plantingprojector.com) and submit to your Church Planting Catalyst for final approval and partner confirmation.

14. NAMB gives final approval to support church planter.

15. Work with a Church Planting Catalyst in your new focus area to develop your initial church planting strategy. As you do so, take into account the information provided on the Decided page, including the downloadable Decided Process Checklist.

**NAMB does charge for their online assessments, which they can reimburse after approval. If the costs of the Online Profiles create a financial strain, please contact us for assistance.

Our application and assessment process is not intended to tell you if God is calling you to plant, but instead is to help Northwest Baptist Planting determine if we are to partner with you. If we do choose to partner with you, the assessment and application results enable us to best assist you in your church planting process.
